Tour 3
Ljubljana – Medvode – Mengeš – Cerklje – Golnik – Naklo – Kranj – Medvode – Ljubljana
The area of western Upper Carniola has many scenic cycling trails, leading village from village, across wide meadows and fields, and passing by numerous natural and cultural sights, with views of the mighty Kamnik-Savinja and Julian Alps. The trails are rather flat, with short ascents and descents, but follow roads, which are mainly side roads with little traffic.
Our cycling begins in Ljubljana, on the D-2 route, in the direction of Medvode. At Medno village we cross the bridge across the Sava river and continue towards Smlednik. At the main crossroads, we take the left turn to Vodice and Mengeš. By Moste village, we join the G-7 cycling trail and go in the direction of Cerklje. Nearby, we can enjoy a rest in a beautiful park of Strmol Castle.
We go on in the direction of Preddvor on the LG4 trail. In the village of Križe, we take the G-6 route and turn left in the direction of Kranj. When passing by Žiganja Vas, we can rest in the shadow of a 500-year-old linden tree. Further on, the trail takes us by the edge of Udin Boršt Regional Park to Naklo before we arrive in Kranj. We can have lunch in one of the restaurants in Kranj Old Town, or we visit Khislstein Castle and its Museum of the Gorenjska Region.
From Kranj we follow the River Sava, passing by the Trboje and Zbilje lakes until we reach Medvode. We continue in the direction of Ljubljana.
